What Is an LNG Storage Tank?
LNG (liquified natural gas) is a natural gas that condenses into a liquid when cooled to -260°F (-161.5°C). Storing LNG requires a large-volume tank that’s stored above ground in a low-pressure area. Most LNG gas storage tanks are double-walled with a carbon steel outer wall and the inner wall made from nickel steel. Double-walled tanks are common because steel is too brittle to withstand direct contact with the liquid. A large insulation blanket is also used to maintain the right cryogenic temperature.
Safely Storing LNG
LNG is a commodity that can be stored indefinitely so long as the right conditions are followed. Typically, there are three main storage systems used: single, double, or full containment.
- Single: This tank consists of an inner container that is liquid-tight and an outer container designed for vapor pressure and to protect the insulation.
- Double: A double container has both a liquid and vapor-tight container.
- Full containment: This storage tank has a liquid-tight primary container and a vapor-tight secondary container, both of which can hold LNG. The second container ensures proper vapor release should a leak occur.
Each of these containers must be stored at pressures of less than 5 PSIG to 250 PSIG. Additionally, the tanks must be kept at a temperature of at least -177°F (-83°C) to ensure the gas remains in a liquid state.
If LNG is not stored or cooled properly, it will begin to warm and vaporize, turning into methane gas. High amounts of methane gas can cause asphyxiation and is extremely hazardous to anyone exposed.
